Good stuff A…I have no concerns regarding your work…keep it up, your intentions are sensible…why not take a risk! As I’ve probably said a million times, editing down is an important part of academic writing, so get used to to curtaig and clarifying your points..always tease out the meaty morsels through your writing and then edit down. You can look for to bigger word counts when you progress to an MA!

Best,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Just got our essay questions for our essay in after Easter. I think I’m going to go with

1. What do you understand by the term ‘postmodern’? Discuss with reference to theatre/performance practices.
I was thinking of defining post-modernism and then moving on to analyse plays/musicals such as ‘Wicked’ and argue that they are hyper-real.
What do you think? and could recommend some reading on the subject.

Cheers

Hi A,
Yes, this sounds good. I would recommend ‘Liveness’ by Philip Auslander and an article entitled ‘theatre tourism’ by Susan . Best of luck!

Problem

to Mark

Hi Mark,
Sorry to email again but I have a rather large problem. It seems it’s impossible to get your hands on a script for a musical such as ‘Wicked’. I have found scripts on the internet that come from less than academic websites but without a way to cite the plays I’m more than a bit stuck. Have no idea what to do.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated, I have emailed my tutor about this but to no avail.
Hope you’re having a nice Easter.

Thanks

Hi Mark,
Hope Phd isn’t dragging you down too much. I’m doing the dissertation course this year and have been told to chat to a few of the supervising tutors to see which one suits our needs. I heard you were open to supervise students and was wondering if their was a time I could come and see you for some assistance, I’ve got a few conflicting ideas of what I want to do in my head and would would love to discuss it with you, even just for some clarity. I’ll be honest, I haven’t got a clear idea of what I want to do.

Also I was thinking, for my future poetry bomb of waterstones, that i might put a hashtag at the end so it can be talked about on twitter, so I can get (probably unimpressed) reactions from the people that find them,. May get a nasty e-mail from waterstones though… what do you think?

Draft

A. TAYLOR <a.taylor-lost@hotmail.com>
24/04/2013

Hi Mark, I’ve emailed asking about word count, he’s not replied. According to moodle and the handbook it’s supposed to be 5-6,000 words but I distinctly remember it being around 8,000. Either way, I carried on regardless and finished a draft of chapter 2. Put some notes at the start about doing an introduction, put an ‘afterword’ at the end and got 2 appendixes. Hope this isn’t too much to dump on you.
Other than the word count I’m most worried about referencing and staying focused on the question.
Feel free to gut it.
Cheers,

Word Count

Hello hello,
Just got this e-mail from .

“Hi Jonathan
We usually combine the literature review and the final submission to get to a total word length of 8,000 – 9,000 for the module. I would try not to go to far beyond 9,000 if you can.
thanks

Kind of starting to panic now, I’ve got 10,000 words and that’s without an introduction…
any advice?
It was all going sooo well.
Thanks,

Hi A,

The poetic text you sent me is excellent…maybe try a few more and include them/talk about them in a chapter or appendix – I’ll leave this decision to you but it strikes me that they show you have an understanding of your enquiry and how you are able to engage practically as-well as critically with your subject.
Here are the documents you requested…I hope you’re not over-saturated. All the stuff from the Language Book i.e. ‘Taylor documents’ should be referenced as:
Andrews, B. and C. Bernstein (Eds.) (1984) The Language Book. Ilois: South Ilois University Press

Also, the Beckett text (which ties in nicely with the sound poets text) is available here:http://www.stevenconnor.com/looping/

I hope these are useful; and good luck with the writing…I’m looking for to reading it.

Best,
Mark

MA by Creative Practice Submission Dates
Inbox x

to STEVIE, TASHYA, GABRIELLE, ROBERT, , JADE, JASON, ANA, SORCHA, me, ED, SINEM, NATHAN, KATHRYN, Tony, , Simon, , Janice, , Mark, Brian

Dear All,

just a reminder/clarification about submission dates:

All FULL TIME students should be making arrangements with their supervisors to submit work for BCPM002 Negotiated Creative Practice in the next couple of weeks or so (there is some flexibility here due to a wide variety of practices and commitments). The body of work to be submitted will be everything that has been produced in your practice since beginning the MA and part of your assessment will be a viva with your supervisor during which you will reflect on the way that your practice has developed since you produced your original research proposal. This will also feed for into BCPM003 Autonomous Creative Practice. Your submission should also include contextual/back up work.

All PART TIME students will submit this work in May.

ALL students will submit the three pieces of written work for BCPM001 in March. If any body feels that they will need an extension for any work will they please approach me.

I am attaching a copy of the assessment sheets.

Please contact me if you need any further clarification or information.

I am also hoping to have a Tuesday lecture programme ready for you in the very near future.

Best wishes,

Research Skills

A. TAYLOR <a.taylor-lost@hotmail.com>
27/01/2014

to Mark

Hi Mark,
That’s right, after a brief stint of silence, I’m back.
I’ve just finished my first draft of my research skills assignment, it’s littered with grammatical and spelg errors, it’s not referenced yet and I intend to to jig about a bit but I wanted to get it to you asap. Could you give it a quick read over? Even if it’s just to check my ideas are going in the right direction. I’ve also left quotes from my research at the bottom if you think there’s some I should try and include. Also, let me know if there’s some theory that it’s in need of, I toyed with people like foccault and baudrillard (particularly his simulations) but I’m already, as always, 2,000 words over the 3,000 word word count.
Would appreciate your help.

Enjoyed your lecture the other night, your stein-inspired stuff about creating a permanent present reminded me of ‘The Stanley Parable’ and its obsession with ‘The end is never the end is never the end is never the end…’ and the number 8.

Cheers,
A.

Sorry this reply has taken a while, been a funny couple of weeks.
I get the train to Liverpool from Blackpool so any day of the week is possible, preferably in the afternoon so I don’t have to get the train too early. The only time I can’t really do is Tuesday evenings. So, whenever’s good with me, just let me know a day that you’re free and I’ll be there.

Sorry for the shameless grab for attention but I’ve literally just finished my first draft of the critical skills essay and was hoping you’d be able to look over it. It’s 1,000 words over count, as always, but I’d like your help in cutting bits out if that’s ok. It’s littered with mistakes and such again but I’d like to know whether I’m on track with it and If my ideas are as good as they can be.
Hoping I can get this and research skills tidied up so I can focus on my battle with business skills which I am panicking about now.
Enjoyed my meet with Nathan, he seemed rather busy but he helped out a lot by raising some questions about my practice. You can tell he’s a producer and collaborator, I kept trying to talk about his practice but he seemed more interested in discussing mine. Hopefully I made a good impression because he seems like a great contact to have and if he can put me on somewhere or something it would be fantastic.
So, cheers for that.

Also, if you get chance, could you check out my Twitter accounts blog, I’m the A. Taylor guy.

Hello hello, here’s the (hopefully) final version of the research skills piece. The word-limit is 3,000 and it’s 4,479 words long. However, 1,000 of those words are quotes meaning it’s actually about 3,479 which is just 100 words over the 10% leeway that we get so I’m hoping it will slip by unnoticed…
If you don’t get chance to read through it it’s ok, I’m also emaig it you just so I’ve got a copy floating about in the cloud incase my laptop melts or something. In the meantime, here’s that blog I was talking about, I’ve not added to it in aaages because of these skills tasks but i hope to get it off the ground later. Let me know what you reckon.

Great A,
Just a quick question…am I officially registered as your supervisor? If so then it means I will be second marking your work. I’ve chatted with and he agrees with me re: the anti-business model we discussed. Have you had the chance to discuss this with ?

Best,

Ha! ‘A’.
Ermm I would hope so. I did mention I’d like to talk to her about it but she gave me some spiel about doing it ‘hypothetically’, I’m hoping to see her next Tuesday before the lecture where I’ll hopefully be able to convince her. She seemed resistant to any deviation though. Would imagine it would help if we both contact her. I’ll whip up a draft email to her tomorrow for you to read to explain the situation.
Here’s my business plan document as it stands now…
and these are the guidees we were given by Michael Boyle in case you want to know what we’re supposed to be rejecting.

Cheers,
A

Dear all, I am just noting a few of the points from the power point discussed last night to help you with your business plan rationale:
• Identifying your position in the market (of your chosen field) on entering an existing market or a new market.
• Have you identified your competitors and how the market is structured, how it operates and who owns what share of the market ?
• Are you looking to break into an existing market and attract a niche set of customers, audiences or clientele?
• In market research:
• Are you aware of buyer behaviour?
• Do you know who makes the decisions and holds the purse strings regarding the purchase of your product/service?
• Have you done a SWOT Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats analysis of yourself, the market and your competitors?
• Do you know what your product life cycle will be?
• Hoe will you identify your customers?
• What is the frequency of use of your product/service? How will you ensure customer loyalty?
• Research is normally done through quantitative and qualitative methods:
• Qualitative: understanding motives, small (possibly focus groups) discussions/interviews finding answers to why, how, when, what and where questions (in depth).
• Quantitative: form (usually) a questionnaire – deag with large numbers of (demographic) targeted responses leading to operationally viable statistics.
• Marketing mix – look up – deals with variables you can introduce into your product, price, place and promotion.
• Calculating your unit cost.
• Product adoption curve.
• Micro and macro environments – look up (Macro deals political/legal, economic, social and technological often abbreviated to P.E.S.T.) ; micro environment deals with issues within the influence of the business – customers, competitors, sources of materials, distribution etc.
• Branding your brand.
• Attitudes to your brand category.
• What is your competitive edge and your Unique Selg Point (USP)?
• Identifying and meeting customer need?
• Selg – sell the benefits not the costs.
• Structure of the business:
• Sole Trader – A sole trader describes any business that is owned and controlled by one person – although they may employ workers. Sole traders do not have a separate legal existence from the business. In the eyes of the law, the business and the owner are the same. As a result, the owner is personally liable for the firm’s debts and may have to pay for losses made by the business out of their own pocket. This is called unlimited liability.
• Advantages of being a sole trader.
• Sole control – full decision making powers.
• All profits from the business belong to you.
• Setting up is relatively easy – no need to register at Companies House.
• You are not obliged to have your business accounts audited or made public, which saves you time and money.
• You will need to submit accounts to HMRC, but (unlike limited companies) you are not required to submit accounts to Companies House.
• It can be personally satisfying to work for yourself. As a sole trader you can put all your enthusiasm into the business and make the most of your own ideas.
Disadvantages of being a sole trader:
• As a Sole trader you have unlimited liability, so you are personally responsible for all debts and liabilities incurred.
• Your own knowledge and skills may restrict business growth.
Private Limited Company:
• A limited company has to register its name with Companies House.
• A limited company has special status in the eyes of the law. These types of company are incorporated, which means they have their own legal identity and can sue or own assets in their own right.
• The ownership of a limited company is divided up into equal parts called shares. Whoever owns one or more of these is called a shareholder.
• Limited companies have their own legal identity, their owners are not personally liable for the firm’s debts. The shareholders have limited liability, which is the major advantage of this type of business legal structure.
• Unlike sole traders, which have to submit their accounts only to HMRC, a private limited company must deliver an annual return and accounts to the Registrar of Companies at Companies House. The accounts must include:
•A balance sheet.
•An auditor’s report
• A profit and loss account.

Y You would be advised to create a Private Limited Company.

These pointers should help you to think through your business strategy and help you to see how it will look and perform.

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions. Best wishes, Mike.

Butchered Critical Skills and Anti-Business skills

A. TAYLOR <a.taylor-lost@hotmail.com>
26/03/2014

to Mark

Hello, me again.
Here’s the hopeful final copy of the critical skills piece, it’s at 3,250, 50 words under the 10% either way that we get so it’s in the word count, i did get it less than that but I wanted to throw in a bit about prosumption.
Got your text and am about to start my reading, found Kunst’s blog with her essays on, at a glance it seems that ‘How Time Can Dispossess’ and ‘Prognosis on Collaboration’ will be the most useful so I’ll look at them first.
I had a good look for McCafferry’s ‘Writing as a General Economy’ one but to no avail, I will keep looking but if you have a copy of it somewhere somehow that would be amazing.
On a more general note I’m a bit unsure of what tone to go with for this so I’ll probably be sending you an introduction or something soon.
May be a mad rush next week to get this in for the 4th…
Thanks for your support with this, appreciated.

This is a reminder that your completed work for BCPM003 must be handed in and signed for by (or have been assessed if of an ephemeral nature such as a performance) by 4pm on Friday 23rd January 2015.

Please liaise with your supervisors to ensure this happens.

If you desperately need an extension for any mitigating circumstance, please ensure you have written confirmation that this will be granted; as post dated extensions are not allowed except in very specific and serious medical or personal circumstances.
Kind regards

Hi A,
Yes. Really good stuff. Be prolific and exhaust yourself with making these so you have a few to choose from. I think both are excellent posters…might be useful visiting repro-graphics at Hope Park and discussing print ideas?

Lecture and such

to Mark

Hellohello
Just saying thanks for letting me give that lecture, if an opportunity comes up like that again just let us know, anything to get my foot in the door a bit… Also, I know its a little late but you could pass my hope email about to Cathy/Kathy’s (don’t know which one it is) students who saw the lecture if they have any questions. Was in touch with before the lecture about booking the space downstairs within the first few weeks of September, before the new students arrive. Will get back in touch with her this week, hope we can meet again soon to discuss where to go next. Was also thinking of applying for the internship if its still running.
Cheers

to me

Hi A,
This is fine but try to refine it. At the moment it’s a bit messy with changes in tense and too much information about your academic studies — try to focus on your art/text practice, the transitions of words and text through a variety of media and lo-fi filters. The zines, the actions, the sonic works, page works, spoken…etc
Give an indication of what you could do to develop your practice, developing work for the radio. What is specific about radio media? It may be worth looking at Radio Benjamin –a collection of essays written for radio by Walter Benjamin. Try to present yourself as an artist as opposed to a student.
Hope this helps!

Meeting and exhibition

A. TAYLOR <a.taylor-lost@hotmail.com>
28 Apr

to Mark

Hi Mark
Met with the MA group last night and the fine art type students are putting on a group exhibition which I’ve attached on to. Was wondering of we could meet to discuss the dates they’ve given me and if they’re good for you assessment whose. Also, I’d like your opinion on which room I should go for, as it stands I can have COR010 or the back room of COR009. There are problems and advantages to do with each.
As a side note, heard back from edge hill last night, no joy I’m afraid. Shane really would have liked to at least get to the interview stage.
Cheers

MA Creative Practice Final Project
Inbox x

A. TAYLOR <a.taylor-lost@hotmail.com>
11 May

to Mark,

Dear Mark
I intend to show my work as part of a group exhibition at Liverpool Hope Creative Campus with my fellow MA students.
The space will be prepared during July and the space brought up to exhibition standard.
Following this, the work will be installed during the week of 7th-11th September and assessed on the 14th.
A private viewing will take place on the 17th of September and the show itself will run from the 18th to the 24th. Some work, however, will not be able to run the whole period.
After the show ends, the work will be taken down and the space cleared before the 25th.
Once these dates are cleared with you I can begin preparing the exhibition, and enquire with the university staff regarding the instillation of posters, mp3 players and computer monitors.

Thank you,

A. Taylor
